~70,000 Palestinians Killed by Israel: NOT TRUE!

The other day, I was talking with a fellow pastor about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. His words were, “I support Israel, but I do not support them murdering over 70,000 Palestinian women and children.” I have heard this same sentiment expressed by countless other Christians. There seems to be a common belief that Israel has unabashedly killed over 70,000 Palestinians since the October 7, 2023 terrorist attack that killed approximately 1,600 Jews.

People have suggested that Israel has gone overboard with revenge killings. The question has been raised, “How can Israel justify killing 70,000 people when Hamas only killed 1,600 Jewish people?” Public schools and even our local Christian schools have adopted the belief that Israel’s actions are unjustified and evil. However, I have one major question to ask: “Is it true?”

Did Israel kill over 70,000 Palestinians since October 7, 2023?
How do we know this is true?
Where did those numbers come from?

Rather than believing the narrative, I started researching the facts. First, I visited the World Health Organization’s Unified Health Dashboard. This is where the WHO reports the number of casualties occurring in the “occupied Palestinian territory.” To my surprise, it stated that the number of casualties as of the date of this post was 74,250. I was appalled and astonished by the sheer magnitude of the number of deaths.

So I dug a little deeper. I wanted to see where those numbers came from. As I read the report, it stated in tiny letters, “Casualties as REPORTED by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.” The wording caught me off guard because it said “as REPORTED by.” As a scholar, I understand that a report does not mean something has been verified. I can report that I have a million dollars, but that does not make it a verified fact!

So I dug a little bit more deeper. I wanted to find out what the Palestinian Ministry of Health was. Who are its leaders? Where did they get their data? Is their data verified?

What is the Palestinian Ministry of Health (PMH)?

The PMH is a ministry under the authority of Hamas, a terrorist organization. Article 8 of its charter openly states that the motto of its movement is, “Allah is its Goal. The Messenger is its Leader. The Quran is its Constitution. Jihad is its methodology, and Death for the sake of Allah is its most coveted desire.” The opening of the charter states that its goal is the total annihilation of Israel.

The two men who lead the PMH are Dr. Medhat Abbas and Dr. Muneer al-Boursh. They are both devout Muslim extremists and members of Hamas. This, in and of itself, has raised even more questions and concerns about the validity of their reporting.

Why? Because, under Islamic law, a person can practice taqiyya, which is the act of lying to further the purposes of Islam. Unlike Judaism and Christianity, which teach that lying is a sin, the opposite is true under Islam. Lying is 100% permissible under Islam. So the question is: How do we know whether these known liars are telling us the truth?

This led me to my final source.

I visited the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) website. This is the organization responsible for validating the number of casualties in Palestine.

OCHA verified only 7,498 Palestinian casualties.

When you visit its site, you will notice something very interesting. The number of casualties it has independently verified is not the + 70,000 we were all told about. Rather, it is 7,498. Its website states that the numbers reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health have not been verified. For OCHA to verify the number of casualties, the data must be validated by at least two independent and reliable sources. This independent verification has not yet occurred, and any claims or beliefs that the Palestinian Ministry of Health casualty figures are true and accurate are indeed false!

Once OCHA starts validating the numbers, however, this will raise a new set of questions. Which two independent organizations will be involved, and what validation methodology will they use?

There are so many questions left unanswered. But one question has been answered: There is no verified source confirming that Israel killed approximately 70,000 Palestinians!
