Question:
Dear Dr. Usher,
I suffer from mental health issues. When I see the world, I see that it is full of suffering. I have been told that God can heal the sick, but that usually refers to physical sickness that can be seen. What about invisible sicknesses like mental illness or emotional trauma? Does God heal those things to?
Answer:
God wants His children to be healed in every area of their lives. He does not want us to be suffering all the time. The Bible says:
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:8).
God is love. It is love that makes God to give blessings to His people. Because of Love, God gave His only Son to die for men. The first book of John says:
“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9).
God has such great love for His children that He wants to take care of us. He does not want to leave us alone with our problems. God says in the Bible that He cares for His children. The book of Psalms says:
“A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1).
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4).
The Word of God says that He is our shepherd. A shepherd takes care of the sheep. He feeds them. He gives them a place to rest and He protects them from any dangerous threat. Christians are like God’s sheep. He is our provider and our comforter in times of need. God is there when He is needed the most. The Bible says that He is omnipresent. In the book of Psalms says:
“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there” (Psalm 139:7,8).
Nobody can hide from God. This is why God can help us in whatever circumstances His people need Him. God wants to help people; He does not want to destroy them. He has great compassion for those who are hurt. Therefore, He is among His children to heal them and restore. The Book of Romans says:
“And the LORD was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet”
(2 Kings 13:23).
In this verse, it is clear that God had such compassion for the people that He forgave them. He did not destroy them. God is like that when His children sin against Him. He has such a big love and compassion for them that He is faithful to forgive them. God is good all the time and only wants good for believers. He does not want to destroy us, even when we sin against them.
He promises to restore everything His children had lost. There are many verses in the Bible that talk about restoration. One of these verses is in the book of Psalms:
“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake” (Psalm 23:3)
However, this is not the only verse that refers to restoration of people.
A good book to read is the book of Job. This is the story that you should read. It will lift up your spirits. You will learn that God can do more for you than He did for Job because IF you are a believer, then you are under a new and better covenant. See, Job lost everything he had in life, however at the end, he remained faithful and God brought back the double of everything he had lost. How much more will God do for you under His new covenant with Jesus Christ?
